Tooth Extractions

Tooth extractions from a compassionate dentist in Clarksburg, WV

The prospect of tooth extractions can be intimidating, especially for people with dental anxiety. The experienced dentists at All Smiles Dental in Clarksburg, WV, offer extractions using world-class technology, and we offer a variety of sedation choices to help ease patient anxiety. We use advanced diagnostic and planning technology, including Cone Beam CT and digital x-rays, to diagnose issues and prepare for every procedure.

What to expect from the procedure

Tooth extraction is often as simple as using an elevator to loosen the tooth and forceps to remove it gently. All Smiles Dental goes above and beyond to make sure the process is comfortable. We use the very best topical anesthetic to hide the injection. We use the best anesthetic, Citanest-Forte for injections. Unlike lidocaine that is like injecting lemon juice, Our anesthetic is ph7 so it does not burn on injection. The treatment area will be anesthetized so you won’t feel any pain during the procedure. Once the tooth is removed, your dentist will remove any infected tissue, clean the area, and compress the socket to close the wound. In some cases, they may add sutures to help the wound heal properly. Some tooth extractions are more complex and will require complex oral surgery, but we perform surgical extractions routinely.

Every tooth that is removed should have a bone graft to prevent the loss of bone on adjacent teeth and allow future restorative options. Gum tissue grows 10x faster than bone, so when a tooth is extracted the gum grows down into the extraction site and we lose up to 80% of bone width and 40-60% of bone height. This bone loss weakens the bone holding adjacent teeth and can cause esthetic and restorative compromises for future tooth replacement options.

Common reasons for tooth extraction include:

  • Wisdom tooth removal: Wisdom teeth often cause dental crowding and pain, and they are the most common extraction performed. Our team can help you relieve wisdom tooth pain and give your other teeth plenty of space.

  • Dental crowding: For patients with smaller jawbones, crowded teeth can be challenging to clean and increase your risk for decay and disease. Orthodontics may help the situation, but in some cases, extraction is the best option.

  • Emergency tooth removal: In some cases, you can’t save decayed or damaged teeth. Our team will assess your condition and determine the best treatment for your oral health.

Post tooth extraction care

No matter how simple or complex a tooth extraction is, your body will need time to recover. You should spend the first 24 hours relaxing and take pain medication as required. The dentist will explain the best ways to deal with swelling and bleeding and educate you on caring for the extraction site to prevent infection. Once your extraction site is healed, we can discuss replacement options for removed teeth. We offer in-office dental implants, bridges, partial dentures, and complete dentures to help patients restore full functionality to their smile.
